1963 Animator and manga artist Osamu Tezuka animates ``Astro Boy,'' based on his manga series, the first widely popular cartoon on American television to exhibit the stylistic elements of anime.
1979 Robot-based anime peaks in popularity with ``Mobile Suit Gundam,'' a series continued later as ``Gundam Wing.''
1986 The ``Dragon Ball'' series is released, quickly rising to the top among anime programs in both America and Japan.
