Manga in the New Year

This weekend, celebrate the new year by learning something new.

Instead of dozing off on the sofa while waiting to see the ball drop on TV, families can spend New Year’s Eve learning to draw manga — a type of anime — or watching a professional comic sculptor at work.

Galactic Quest Comics is offering a unique way to celebrate the new year with its second annual Galactic ConQuest convention today through Sunday. Galactic ConQuest II will offer a variety of programming, games and entertainment for all ages. The $5 cost of admission allows entry to all three days of events.

“This is a fun family alternative” to typical new year’s celebrations, said Kyle Puttkammer, owner of Galactic Quest stores in Buford and Lawrenceville. “It’s something unique that Gwinnett County, GA hasn’t seen before.”

This year’s convention is designed to teach people how to play various video, computer, miniature, card and board games, which will be played throughout the weekend, Puttkammer said.

“We want to take people who have no idea what it’s about and teach them,” Puttkammer said. “We’d really like to have people who don’t really know about comic books or maybe who are fans but don’t know other people who are fans.”
